Laser Hair Removal in Montclair, NJ

At the Aurora DeJuliis MD European Medical Spa in Montclair, NJ, we are able to perform laser hair removal for any skin color. The treatments are very comfortable and usually are spaced between four and six weeks apart. Patients are required to shave the area prior to their hair removal appointment.

The IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Laser works by targeting unwanted hair follicles below the surface of the skin. When a beam of laser light is applied over an area of the skin with excessive hair, the light travels through the skin and reaches the hair follicles. In the process the hair roots are destroyed.

Hair removal is accomplished with a series of laser treatments depending on the size of the area, as well as the texture and color of the hair. Dark and coarse hair responds the best to laser hair removal treatments. Also people who experience faster hair growth may need an occasional touch up or additional laser session.

Laser Hair Removal FAQs

How does the laser hair removal process work?

A Beam of laser light penetrates the skin reaching the hair follicle underneath. Actually the laser will use the hair shaft to deliver the energy to the base of the follicle where it will be destroyed.  One needs to have at least three sessions in the same area, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. That is because hair grows in three different phases and since only the hair visible at the surface of the skin will be reached by the laser light the process requires a minimum of three treatments.

Some patients will require more sessions. This depends on the type of hair, location, and the individual rate of hair growth. Some patients might have hormonal imbalances.

During the laser treatment some hair will be destroyed by the light, but since the rest of the hair is impared by the laser, the vast majority of excessive hair will come off over the next few days.

We recommend using a loofah glove or a towel to massage the treated area in order to promote hair loss.

Will I see results right away?

As with any cosmetic procedure, results vary from patient to patient. In the case of laser hair removal, the area treated, thickness of hair, color of skin and type of laser used will all influence how effective the treatment is. However, after your first treatment you can expect 10-25% hair reduction. You will likely need 2-6 treatments in total to remove the hair completely.

What areas can be treated with lasers?

Essentially anywhere on your body where there is unwanted hair can be treated with lasers. This includes underarms, legs, bikini lines, arms, hands, feet, necks and backs. Although originally only patients with dark hair and light skin were candidates, new technology has opened the door for patients with any skin tone and hair thickness to take advantage of this cosmetic procedure.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

For about a month or so prior to your laser hair removal you should avoid tanning, waxing and plucking. A few days before stop taking blood thinners, pain relievers and NSAIDs. The day of you should shower, but don’t apply any sunscreen, moisturizers, creams or other skin care products. Also, completely shave the area being treated prior to your appointment.

Are there any post treatment protocols to follow?

You can apply aloe vera gel to your skin to help ease any discomfort that you have. Try to avoid anything that increases your body temperature, such as cardio exercise, saunas, hot tubs, etc. for 24 hours. Try to avoid exposure to the sun and if you do need to be outdoors make sure you apply high SPF sunscreen. Do not have any additional procedures done between treatments, although you can shave if you’d like.
