Treatment Options for Aging Hands

Aging Hands

Skin rejuvenation is not limited to the face. Any part of your body can be refreshed and improved. This is particularly true when it comes to aging hands. We all know that a patient’s age can easily be given away by the appearance of his/her hands.

Hands age in a very unique and predictable way. As we age, we observe decreased collagen production and volume loss in the back of the hands. Veins appear more visible and tendons are more pronounced. The overlying skin becomes thinner and wrinkled. Dark pigmentations (also called liver spots) and uneven skin color can add more years to the already aging hands.

Volume loss is corrected with the use of Radiesse, the only dermal filler FDA-approved for hand rejuvenation. The procedure is quick, non-painful, and the results are visible immediately.

For skin improvement, Dr DeJuliis uses laser light or chemical peels, depending on the patient’s need and preference. Periodic medical microdermabrasion, with our certified skin assistant, ensures that your hand rejuvenation will continue to improve over time.

Dr DeJuliis, in her state-of-the-art Medical Spa in Montclair, NJ, is trained and certified in hand rejuvenation.

Aging Hands FAQs

What are the options for hand rejuvenation?

There are several effective treatments for hand rejuvenation. For addressing volume loss, Radiesse is preferred. It’s the only dermal filler that is FDA-approved for this purpose. Other fillers can be used with good results. Juvederm or Vollure can plump the back of your hands and replace volume loss.To improve the skin texture and eliminate sun spots, laser light and chemical peels can be very effective, as can periodic microdermabrasions.

What causes the hands to age?

There are a number of factors that contribute to aging hands. Over time there is collagen loss, which can cause a reduction in skin elasticity, wrinkles and sagging. There’s also the effect of sun damage and chemical exposure that can make hands look old. People experience rough skin, age spots and visible veins, especially those who haven’t taken care of their hands properly. Fortunately there are cosmetic treatments that can address these concerns.

How can I keep my hands from appearing aged?

Although you can’t turn back the “hands” of time, there are ways to combat the aging process. One of the best ways, before and after your next treatment, is to apply sunscreen on a regular basis. Whenever you are going to be in contact with harsh chemicals, make sure you are wearing protective gloves. You should moisturize your skin as part of your daily routine. Lastly, keep up with your cosmetic appointments to ensure that your skin is in optimum condition.

Am I a candidate for hand rejuvenation?

Anyone with concerns about the appearance of their hands is potentially a candidate for rejuvenation. If you have pronounced veins, age spots, wrinkles or other imperfections, one or more cosmetic treatments might be a great option for you. The doctor will help you decide the best course of action for your particular concern.

How long does hand rejuvenation last?

The duration of the effects will depend on the treatment. Generally speaking, a dermal filler such as Radiesse will last 12- 15 months. Laser skin treatment can last three to five years or more. Chemical peels can last 1-2 months or more. Of course, results vary from patient to patient. The doctor will recommend post treatment protocols to enhance and prolong your results.
